Edmund joins Murray at the Australian Open

British Tennis had some news to be pleased about today as it has been confirmed that Kyle Edmund will join Andy Murray at the Australian Open next week.

The 20 year old South African, British born tennis player heads into the Australian Open after beating Australian Dane Propoggia 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 9-7.

As well as Murray, he’ll also be joining James Ward in the main draw, marking a significant improvement in the standard at he highest level in men’s British Tennis. It could well have been four, yet Liam Broady failed to qualify having suffered defeat to Michael Russell in straight sets.

The draw having been made means that Edmund will face 25 year old Steve Johnson from the U.S. and who currently ranks 39th in the world rankings, a hefty 153 places above the Brit.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Edmund said: “Everyone’s desperate to qualify so winning three matches against tough players definitely gives me confidence going into the main draw.”
