World Cup Semi-finals: Astonishing win for Germany, Catastrophe for Brazil

Well, let’s have a look at the positives for Brazil to have emerged from this match. For one, nobody died, thank God for that. Two, Fred will probably never play for Brazil again. Three, it was 7-0, not 7-1. And four, Brazilian fans now have an opportunity to make windfall profits by selling their tickets for the final on July 13 at Estadio Maracano in Rio de Janeiro for big money to German fans, and fans of whoever among Argentina and Holland make it through later tonight. And lastly, life goes on, football is just a game!

Now that we have got the positives out of the way – what an astonishing result? Nobody in their right mind would have considered what happened at the Estadio Mineiro last night as even being in the realm of possibility. Brazil beaten 7-1, at home, in a World Cup semi-final! Such a result beggars belief. Several World Cups have been held over a great number of decades, but never has anybody been a witness to a result like this. To say that this was a shocking result would be an understatement.

What makes it all the more astonishing is that all World Cup semi-finals tend to tense affairs, with one of the sides nicking it at the end, possibly at the 119th minute as Italy did against Germany in the 2006 World Cup held in Germany, or ending in a penalty shootout with nothing separating the two sides even after 120 minutes. The reason these matches are so close is because the teams that enter the semi-finals of a World Cup are evenly matched, with not much separating them in terms of individual talent. These matches tend to be decided by which side has that extra something to remain standing at the end of a brutal slug fest, not unlike a heavyweight boxing match.

This makes the final result at Estadio Mineiro all the more perplexing. How could Brazil contrive to lose so badly? Sure, Brazil did not have Neymar, who was out because of his horrific injury, and they were without their captain and best defender, Thiago Silva. Even so, Brazil still did have a plenty of highly talented players who play for some of the best clubs in Europe – David Luiz, Oscar, Marcelo, Hulk and Willian to name just a few. For such a team to lose so badly in the most important match of their lives requires a certain amount of skill. It really is not so easy to lose like this!

This loss for Brazil is probably even more shocking than the infamous loss at the hands of their fellow South American rivals Uruguay, when they played them at the final of the 1950 World Cup held in Brazil. It is said about that loss that it threw the entire country into a prolonged spell of a strong nationwide depression, which even caused a great loss to the Brazilian economy, as factory workers and office goers were too sad and too disillusioned to perform their duties at work, having lost all will and determination.

This defeat is even worse than the one in 1950, and just as unexpected. This World Cup was supposed to be Brazil’s great celebration of their nation, one that Luiz Felipe Scolari simply had to win. But Brazil’s great dreams have turned into a nightmare. Brazil may have one of the best performing economies in the world, but it’s hard to see even the national economy remaining unaffected by this devastating loss.

The day began with the joyful sight of all Brazilian players wearing Neymar’s signature baseball cap, as an ode to the nation’s favorite son. The entire Estadio Mineiro, packed to capacity with over 58,000 Brazilian fans, were united in a spirited rendition of the Brazilian national anthem.

And then the match started. It began as just as any other World Cup match till Germany won a corner in the 10th minute. The resulting corner kick taken by Toni Kroos was targeted at Thomas Mueller, who managed to evade his marker David Luiz, and move into space. There wasn’t a yellow shirt in sight to stop Mueller, as he easily steered Kroos’ corner kick into the goal. 1-0 and shock for Brazil, already.

More was to come. Miroslav Klose, the veteran German center forward, who has been scoring tonnes of goals in every World Cup since 2002, scored in the 23rd minute after a splendid spell of quick passing by the whole team. This was his 16th World Cup goal, thus beating the record set by the great Brazilian striker Ronaldo to become the all time World Cup record goal scorer. The crowd was shocked, but there were still hopes for a comeback. But this was not to be so.

The next 6 minutes saw 3 more goals for Germany to make it 5-0. A couple by Toni Kroos, one off his left foot and another off his right, and a goal by Sami Khedira. Only 29 minutes had passed, and Brazil’s World Cup dreams were in tatters.

Brazil went into a complete shock after that, and were never to recover with Manuel Neuer making a string of saves in the second half, denying the home team even a whiff of an opportunity. Substitute Andre Schuerrle was not to be left behind in the fun, scoring 2 easy second half goals, making it 7-0 for Germany. Brazil did get a goal back late at the end to ironic cheers. So 7-1 it finally was.

Germany now play the winners of the semi-final tie between Argentina and Holland in the final on July 13 at Rio di Janeiro. Brazil face the sad prospect of playing the playoff between the losers of the semi-finals for the 3rd and 4th positions.

Here, we at IndiaBet.org would like to take the opportunity to remind our readers that we predicted a comfortable win for Germany in the semi-final against Brazil. We predicted a 3 – 1 result for Germany. The final result, 7-1, is beyond our wildest dreams.
