Top 10 Players to Watch out for in the English Premier League

The new season of the most exciting football league in the world has just begun, and we have picked ten players who we expect to be the top performers for their clubs this year. Brilliant strikers, attacking full-backs, creative midfielders and a great goalkeeper– we got them all.

1. Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea)

Fabregas has a point to prove. Was reckoned to be one of the top midfielders in the world when he was at Arsenal, but had fallen away from the limelight in his time at Barcelona. As his new manager Jose Maurinho says, Cesc wasn’t used well at Barcelona where they used him as a false no. 9, a no.10 or as a winger, while his best position is that of a central midfielder. Fabregas is still only 27 and has a point to prove in his new club.

2. Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)

Rooney is England’s best player and has been so for a decade now. But is he really world class? There are many who believe that Rooney has to do a lot better if he is to be seen in the same league as Lionel Messi or Christiano Ronaldo. Clearly, Wayne didn’t do much last season because of which his club could finish only seventh in the league. Rooney is still critical for Manchester United and new manager Louis Van Gaal would expect a lot from him.

3. Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal)

Sanchez is another world class player who was under utilized in his time at Barcelona. At Arsenal, Sanchez will be the undisputed leader of the attack and will have the freedom of the park that he craves so much as one of the most creative footballers in the world. Sanchez set the World Cup alight only a couple of months ago. Remains to be seen if he carries that form to the Premiership.

4. Diego Costa (Chelsea)

Diego Costa had a strange season last year, winning the Spanish La Liga for his club and finishing runners-up in the UEFA Champion’s League, but having performed so poorly for Spain in the World Cup, his standing as one of the world’s top strikers has been questioned. He has a lot to prove and in Jose Maurinho, he has a coach who expects only the best.

5. Seamus Coleman (Everton)

Coleman made spectacular progress last season under manager Roberto Martinez, who it is said corrected a crucial technical flaw in his game. Last season saw Coleman transform himself into one of the best attacking full-back not only in the Premiership, but in Europe. But just one great season is hardly  enough. Coleman has to prove himself all over again this season as well.

6. Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)

Sturridge has huge shoes to fill as he is now Liverpool’s most important scoring threat with the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona. He had a great season last time, scoring plenty of goals, but a lot of that was done because the attention of the defenders was always focused on Suarez, which gave him the space that he needed. Will be different this time, and will be seen if he is up to the challenge.

7. Marcos Rojo (Manchester United)

Rojo was a star player for Argentina in the World Cup, and impressed Louis Van Gaal so much that the Dutch manager agreed to exchange Nani with the Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon for his services. Rojo is a solid defender who can attack with great passion, and is a constant threat at the set pieces. Plus, he fits perfectly in Val Gaal’s favorite 3-5-2 system.

8. Yaya Toure (Manchester City)

Toure is believed to be the most complete midfielder in the world and he has already won the Premiership for his club on two occasions. Toure has a commanding presence and completely dominates the middle of the park. There is no better box-to-box player than him in the world of football. He will be hoping to make an impact in this season as well.

9. Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)

Aguero is considered by many to be the most lethal striker in the world, who smells opportunity out of nothing and converts a high percentage of his chances. He will want to do well this season after an injury marred World Cup playing for Argentina where we didn’t get to see him at his best.

10. Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea)

Chelsea’s young 22-year old goalkeeper has a tough fight on his hands if he is to hold his spot ahead of Petr Cech, who has been for years the top goalkeeper in the Premiership. But the young Belgian has done more difficult things in the past, such as winning the Spanish La Liga for his old club side Atletico Madrid and is fully capable of answering any challenge.
