Real Madrid signs World Cup superstars James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos

On winning the Champions League this year, their tenth and simply called as the “decima”, there were many who had wondered what was next for the world’s greatest football club, Real Madrid?

Florentino Perez, the President of Real Madrid has always been a highly ambitious man, a man who seeks out the big occasions and then revels in them. It was Perez who brought in Louis Figo from Barcelona in a then world record fee, which was said to be impossible, because of Figo’s perceived loyalty to Barcelona and the great bad blood between the two Spanish giants. But Perez made signing Figo the centerpiece of his presidential campaign, and he won at both – getting Figo from a disgusted and angry Barcelona and becoming the Real Madrid President. Then he went on to sign Zinedine Zidane, who was at that time already a legend, the Brazilian superstar striker Ronaldo and finally David Beckham, the international football celebrity.

Real Madrid was a team of “Galacticos”, superstar footballers in a league all their own. It’s another thing that the strategy didn’t always work out in terms of success in the Spanish Primera Liga and in the European Champions League, but at least, Perez gave Real Madrid fans a great dream. The dream continued with the signing of one of the world’s two greatest footballers, Christiano Ronaldo, and last year of Gareth Bale. Gareth Bale was signed for a world record £86 million, just beating the earlier record set by his more famous teammate, Christiano Ronaldo of £80 million. Bale and Ronaldo are said to be the best attacking players in the world, along with Barcelona’s own superstar duo of Neymar and Lionel Messi.

Apart from this expensive duo, Real Madrid also has a bunch of excellent players such as Angel Di Maria, Luka Modric, Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema, Sami Khedira and a couple of promising young players in Asier Illaramendi and Isco. Real Madrid already have an array of attacking talent. Did they really have to sign another great player? Well, they didn’t need to, but they did! Not one, but two great players, perhaps the best footballers of their generation, who will dominate world football over the next five years or so! And both young players signed by Real Madrid were the unquestioned stars of the recently concluded World Cup.

We are talking about Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, of course. First Madrid sign Germany’s shining star Toni Kroos, for an amazingly bargain price of £20m. Toni Kroos specifically sought a transfer from Bayern Munich to the Bernabeu, and there was no stopping a brilliant young player whose mind was all made up. Toni Kroos will be given the iconic No10 shirt which was last worn by Mesut Özil, and was once famously worn by the great Louis Figo.

The other great super star signed by Madrid was the unexpected star of the World Cup, Colombia’s James Rodríguez. Rodriguez was signed for £63million from the French club, Monaco. Rodriguez has always been a great Real Madrid fan, and when he insisted on joining Madrid, Monaco could hardly say no. Rodriguez passed a medical in Madrid yesterday morning, was given the “all-clear” by Real’s medical staff and has agreed a six-year deal at the Bernabéu. Over 45,000 Real Madrid fans greeted him at the Bernabeu as he was presented to them later on Tuesday night.

Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez are such terrific signings for Real, that it is hard to imagine anybody objecting to them. They are both highly presentable young men with no disciplinary problems of any sort, highly committed to their game, and blessed with superb ability with their feet. What some Real Madrid fans may not like though, is the prospect of losing Angel Di Maria and Sami Khedira to make way for them. Di Maria has been a terrific player for Real Madrid and he was the star of this year’s Champion’s League final against Atletico Madrid. Madrid fans would be sad to see him go, but it seems almost 100% certain that Di Maria will depart for the English Premier League, possibly to Manchester United, which has now been totally energized with Louis Van Gaal as their new manager.

So an exciting season lies ahead for football fans all over the world, which should make up for some of the depression that had set in among many because of the conclusion of the hugely popular World Cup in Brazil.
