Kia Oval Test Player Ratings: India

The fifth match of the Investec Test series saw India succumb to one of its biggest defeats of all time, losing by an innings and 244 runs. Not even one Indian player played well in this Test, except for, perhaps, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who held salvaged the team from complete humiliation in their first innings. We rate all the Indian players and leave it to the readers to decide whether we are being fair with the Indian team.

Gautam Gambhi: 0/10

A first ball duck in the first innings and a painstaking, tortuous 3 in the second. Indian team has had many poor performers, but one would be hardpressed to find one worse than Gambhir.

Murali Vijay: 1/10

Vijay seems to have fallen off the radar after having started the series so well. Made a hard fought 18 in the first innings, and couldn’t do much in the second. Sad end to what was otherwise a pretty decent series for him.

Cheteshwar Pujara: 0/10

It was sad to see India’s replacement to Rahul Dravid play so poorly. Definitely Pujara has more talent than what has been shown by him in this series and in this match. He can only get better from here.

Virat Kohli: 1/10

Kohli’s reputation has taken a whack in this series and this series has exposed his frailties against a decent pace attack in bowler friendly conditions. The only thing different about this match was that he got out to Chris Jordan on both occasions rather than to his usual tormentor, James Anderson.

Ajinkya Rahane: 0/10

A series that started off so brightly for Rahane has ended on a disastrous note. He could only get a total of 4 runs from both innings here, before being out so cheaply. His decline has been alarming.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni: 6/10

Dhoni battled bravely in the first innings, making more than 60% of India’s runs, with a gritty 82, showing the rest of the team exactly how to play the English attack. But made a duck in the second innings, and his captaincy was poor as usual.

Stuart Binny: 2/10

Tried hard in the second innings, and was the highest scoring Indian batsman despite making only 25, was abysmal in the rest of the match, didn’t get to bowl much. Certainly, Binny may well have played his last Test for India, in spite of the fact that his father is a national selector.

Ravichandran Ashwin: 5/10

Bowled well, and did the best he could, but was largely ineffective. Didn’t do much as a batsman this time.

Bhuneshwar Kumar: 2/10

Kumar has deteriorated as the series has gone on and in this match, his bowling was completely pedestrian. Struggled to even maintain a pace of 125 kmh. Batting didn’t amount to much either.

Varun Aaron: 6/10

Bowled with fire and a lot of heart, but there was little this fast bowler from the state of Jharkhand could do, lacking any support from the other bowlers. But definitely, he is one of India’s few positives from this tour.

Ishant Sharma: 6/10

Struggled to impress in this Test after having done so well at Lord’s. His pace was down but still managed to get 4 wickets. Gets high marks for effort.

Needless to add, he is a big fan of Dravid and among the current lot, admires Mitchell Johnson, Dale Steyn and AB de Villiers the most. His greatest wish as an Indian cricket fan is for his country to produce a fast bowler like Johnson or Steyn.
