Investect Test Series Player Ratings: India

Bhuvneshwar Kumar : 7/10

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was India’s Man of the Series, and did exceedingly well in the first two Tests to get 11 wickets and 3 fifties. But since then, he looked exhausted and lacked any pace to make an impact. Got 19 wickets in all.

Murali Vijay: 7/10

Started off brilliantly, making a hundred at Trent Bridge and a match winning 95 at Lord’s, but since then his performance deteriorated. Can’t blame him for some of the dismissals as he did get a few unplayable deliveries from James Anderson. Still, India’s best batsman in the series.

MS Dhoni: 7/10

Did reasonably well with the bat to get four fifties, and made runs when the rest of the team had floundered. But his captaincy was quite poor, some of the bowling changes were befuddling to say the least and field placements lacked imagination.

Ishant Sharma: 8/10

Was the match winner for India at Lord’s, bowled fast and destroyed the English batting with his brilliant bouncers. But got injured and was below his best in the last Test at the Oval. Still managed to pick up 4 wickets.

Ajinkya Rahane: 6/10

Made a spectacular hundred at Lord’s, which was critical for India winning that match. Did well to get two fifties at Southampton, but since then, in the last two Tests, his batting was really quite poor. It was sad to see him lose condidence the way he did.

Cheteshwar Pujara: 3/10

Pujara had to endure a nightmare in England, where he struggled against the English seamers, and got out on numerous occasions to the straight delivery. Can’t blame him too much as he never got much protection from the openers and was often called upon to bat in the first or second overs of every innings.

Virat Kohli: 1/10

Easily, India’s biggest disappointment. This series has probably wrecked his growing reputation for good and will never be seen in the same light again. Made just 134 runs from 10 innings with an average of 13 and a highest score of 39. Struggled against all English bowlers, but particularly against James Anderson. Has become a butt of a million jokes on Facebook and Twitter.

Shikhar Dhawan: 1/10

Played just 3 Tests before being given the sack, but fortunately for him, his replacement was even worse, which means that his job as India’s opener is still safe. But has serious technical flaws – his high backlift and open face made a fatal combination for an opener in England in a swinging summer. Did badly against Moeen Ali’s offspin as well.

Gautam Gambhir: 0/10

Gambhir was easily the worst player in the Indian team, that’s how poor he was. Never looked comfortable while batting, looked scared of bouncers and it was sheer torture to watch him bat. Will never play for India again, that much is clear.

Stuart Binny: 3/10

Was picked as an all rounder, but did nothing to justify his selection. Apart from a knock of 78 in his debut Test was largely invisible throughout the series. Never got to bowl much, but given his pedestrian bowling, it’s unlikely that he would make any impact if he did. Clearly not Test class.

Rohit Sharma: 1/10

Didn’t do much in the only match he got to play, and needlessly threw his wicket away. Just doesn’t look good enough to bat in conditions helpful to bowlers. A flat track bully.

Ravindra Jadeja: 3/10

Had only one significant innings in the entire series, and looked like a walking wicket for the rest of the tour. His bowling was quite mediocre, and wasn’t even half as good as Moeen Ali as a spinner. Has been found out to be a liability for the Indian team. Hardly a surprise that he was dropped for the last Test.

Pankaj Singh: 3/10

India’s unluckiest bowler who toiled hard, and finally took a wicket at Old Trafford with his 416th ball in Tests. But there is a reason he works so hard for his wickets. He is not Test class, quite clearly.

Mohammed Shami: 3/10

Started fairly well before dropping both in pace and confidence. He is another of India’s players who has been found out to be quite mediocre and it would be a surprise to see him last much longer at Test cricket.

Varun Aaron: 8/10

India’s fastest bowler by far. Bowled with fire and conviction, and caused great damage to the English batsmen, particularly to Stuart Broad. If he maintains his pace, he certainly has a long future ahead as an Indian Test cricketer.

Ravichandran Ashwin: 6/10

Was India’s best batsman at Old Trafford and bowled tolerably well at the Oval. Still, could have done a lot better.
